The Communal Table
A Wholistic Perspective on Food and Social Development
Abstract
In order to address issues of isolation in the wake of a global pandemic, this thesis examines the nature of the connection between food and community through commensality. “Commensality” is defined as the practice of eating together, which has demonstrable health benefits on personal, interpersonal, and psychological levels. Research reveals that, while commensality has been a foundational tenet of society since civilization’s beginnings, instances of commensality appear to be at an all time low for modern Americans. The results are diminished mental health, undeveloped support networks, and missed opportunities for emotional connection. All of these may be thought of as symptoms of a larger issue: a lack of social sustainability.
Through analysis of various relevant studies, firsthand accounts, and food-related media, this thesis establishes several observations: first, that today’s young adults struggle with social sustainability, second, that food is instinctually tied to social development, and third, that commensality can serve as a viable means to combat isolation and cultivate community. With this data as a basis, the thesis argues for a holistic perspective of food that encompasses its vital roles as a sustainer and social catalyst, suggesting a strategic use of commensality to promote healthy community.

This thesis represents the culmination of my convictions, my interests, and nearly eight years of education in graphic design. I believe that food and art converge on their shared ability to inspire positive change in and between us, and I’m pleased to share what I’ve created with you. Please enjoy reading my thesis, The Communal Table: A Recipe for Social Sustainability.
Visual Process
What began as a tiny kernel of an idea grew slowly from a variety of inspirations. I began by combining the stylistic leanings of my favorite cookbooks from my collection with vintage photography effects that characterized the imagery of the Kodachrome era.
Combining these influences with text styles inspired by the Coca-Cola logo and other vintage typography, I developed the branding that would become the guiding force of my entire visual direction.
These are examples of the color palettes and vintage photography that inspired many of the homey, nostalgic visuals that populate my final cookbook.

The Communal Table
This is the cover of the finished result of my project: a cookbook titled The Communal Table. This publication is intended to be far more than the average cookbook; Rather, it presents both the tools for user-friendly cooking alongside the means to share these meals with others.
My hope is that, through this publication, I will inspire members of my generation (and generations to come) to try new things and grow their interpersonal relationships through the transformative power of food.
